Walking Meditation
Using Brainwave Entrainment
The basic idea of walking meditation is that you pace or walk
a short stretch of level floor or ground while paying attention
only to your breathing and the movement of your body. It is a
difficult way to meditate for some people because the eyes must
be open for safety. To make it easier, you can use brainwave
entrainment recordings, listening to them on a portable CD player
or an MP3 player. We'll take a quick look at that, and then have
a suggestion for another kind of walking meditation using these
products.
Making It Easy With Technology
Some CD players are small enough and reliable enough to carry
and listen to while walking. I personally prefer using an MP3
player, not only because they are light, but because they are
less likely to skip and less likely to run out of battery life
during a meditation session. If you have only brainwave entrainment
CDs, you can rip them to your computer and the download them
to an MP3 player. If you're not sure how to do this, just ask
a friend who works (or plays) with audio recordings a lot on
his or her computer.
Once you have a good recording ready to go, put on the headphones
and hit the play button. Take a few deep breaths through your
nose, let the tension drain away, and start walking. You should
do this in a safe place, meaning a stretch of ground that is
level, or a hallway where there will not be any other people
for a while. It's best if the stretch you walk allows for at
least ten full strides before you have to turn around.
Start by feeling the air coming and going from your nostrils,
and then expand your attention to include your whole body. Walk
slowly, and close your eyes halfway if that's comfortable. You
can let your eyes rest on the floor or ground a few feet ahead.
You don't need to do much more than this to get into a meditative
state when using these recordings.
Another Kind of Walking Meditation
MP3 players are great for listening to brainwave entrainment
recordings, because they are small, light, don't skip, and have
long battery life. This means you can listen to your favorite
meditation download while walking anywhere.
Try listening while taking a walk along a beautiful trail,
or along the shore of a lake. Normally when you are engaged in
an activity like these you can't enter into a meditative state.
But with a good meditation audio, you can enjoy a new experience.
You may find that you start to see things differently, with a
little more clarity and fewer thoughts that get in the way of
truly seeing the things around you for what they are.
